off-road rims and tires
opinion about jeep and rims?
I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo/ WJ. Its silver with dark gray/charcoal cladding. I am currently in need of new tires and rims, but i can always have new tires put on until i make a decision so time isn’t much of an issue. I plan on tints and new lights along with a new headunit and accompany system (subs and amp). but my big question is….. (1) I was considering lifting my jeep maybe 4″ and powder coating the stock rims (its my daily driver so i dont want to have to replace off road tires constantly). or (2) get 20″ chrome rims. Which do you think would look the best or be the best decision?
Please give me any other suggestions concerning interior or exterior mods.
Adding a 4″ lift will make stock tires look sillly, so then you’ll need 30 inchers to fill the gaping holes. Recalibrating the speedo is mandatory to get the fuel injection back to spec and operating nicely. All that will make you look like a great offroader, but actually slow you down on the street due to the increased tippiness.
20″ chrome rims look great to some, but the complete lack of improved brakes that actually create the problem will make them overworked and create longer stopping distances. Most 20″ tires are street racer patterns with horrible wet stopping, and the combination may have you sliding into the back of traffic in the rain.
Basically you have a semi-off road capable SUV that can be improved one way or the other, but be careful of the unintended consequences. As the main modification seems to be a stereo, keep looking at tire and rim options on line and find out what the guys who have done it will really tell you happens – the honest ones, of course.
It seems someone who drops $4500 on rims has a hard time saying they did themselves wrong. Read between the lines.
